ON THANKSGIVING DAY

What do you know about Thanksgiving Day? You have probably heard about it in films or television series, but what is its origin? Why do Americans celebrate it? We are going to surf the Net in order to find some information we will study and share in common next Wednesday. You have to make a WORD document in which you are going to write or stick the following (write full sentences, please). When you finish your document, please send it to 4bdiversantamarca@gmail.com:

1) The Pilgrim Fathers were the first English settlers who arrived in America. Find a picture of them and stick it to the document.

2) Find the name of the ship they travelled in.

3) When did they arrive in America?

4) Who was the king of England at that time? Find a picture of his portrait and stick it to the document. How did this king die?

5) The Pilgrim Fathers mostly fed on one single animal and one single vegetable, and Americans repeat this tradition at dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Which animal and vegetable are these?

6) How did the Pilgrim Fathers call the Indians they saw around them?

7) Who was Squanto?

8) What is the date when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day?

Urban Tribes

Hello, students from 1º A:

This week we are going to study and describe urban tribes, which usually have their origins in both British and American cities. I would like you to focus on one of these tribes and do the following:

1) Find a photograph of a good example of a person belonging to an urban tribe
2) Make a complete description of what that person is wearing in the photograph
3) Try to specify the origins (when and where) of this group

You can use the Internet or the mass media, such as music magazines or newspapers. Prepare your presentation for next Wednesday. It doesn´t have to be very long, just a few lines and a big photo so everybody in the class can see it. Find below an example of what I want you to do:

Goths date from the late 1970s early 1980s. They grew out of the punk movement with groups such as Siouxsee and the Banshees and The Cure. Their look comes from early horror films such as Dracula and they tend to wear black clothes with silver jewellery and use make-up to make their skin look as pale as possible.
This goth girl is wearing a black dress with silver chains which look like rosaries; she is also wearing very pale make-up and heavy black eyeliner. She has long straight black hair. She looks really pretty, but she would probably look more beautiful without all that make-up!
